Rebecca and Stephen would like to say a huge thanks to all the speakers and chairs, as well as all of the attendees who made Northern Identities such a success.

Although the conference is over, we’re working hard to prepare our proposal for the publication we have planned and will post further news here.

Thanks from Northern Identities!

Rebecca and Stephen would like to say a big thank you to everyone who helped to make Northern Identities such a success last Friday.

We’ve enjoyed receiving some great feedback from a number of delegates and speakers over the past few days and we hope you all enjoyed the conference as much as we did.

It’s not over yet though: we’re currently putting together a book proposal for Cambridge Scholars and will be posting updates here about our progress… so watch this space!

Registration closed.

Registration is now closed. We are fully booked and unable to accept late requests.

We look forward to welcoming delegates on 27th September.

The Call for Papers is now closed; many thanks to everyone who submitted a proposal.

We’re currently reviewing the submissions and will be in touch shortly.

It’s the final countdown!

Only one week to go before the CFP closes, so get your abstract in soon. As we revealed earlier this week, we are in negotiation with Cambridge Scholars Publishing for a post-conference volume based on papers presented at the conference; an ideal opportunity for PhD students and ECRs.

We encourage interdisciplinary approaches to this subject and contributions from any time period are welcome. The conference is free to attend and a limited number of travel bursaries will be available, so what are you waiting for? Get involved!

You can find the CFP here: Northern Identities CFP

Welcome to Northern Identities: Constructions of Space, Place and Region

Welcome to the blog site of the Northern Identities: Constructions of Space, Place and Region Conference, that will be held at Huddersfield University, on the 27 September, 2013. You can check here for updates and news about the conference.

What’s it all about?

This conference is a joint interdisciplinary collaboration between Huddersfield University and Manchester Metropolitan University, that will explore notions and expressions of the North and Northernness. The North of England is an area that easily evokes clichés and stereotypes of its population, rooted in the region’s industrial heritage. Yet the North also has areas of rolling hills and moorland that has provided the background to a long, pre-industrial history. Within these dichotomies of the industrial and the rural, are built constructions and representations of ‘the North’ and ‘Northernness’.

This is a theme that has been explored by academics such as Neville Kirk (ed), Northern Identities, Historical Interpretations of ‘The North’ and ‘Northernness’ (2000) and Dave Russell, Looking North: Northern England and the National Imagination (2004). There is also a growing scholarship which addresses questions of space, place, and Northern identity, from an interdisciplinary perspective, such as Katie Wales, Northern English: A Social and Cultural History (2006) and Christoph Ehland (ed), Thinking Northern: Textures of Identity in Northern England (2007), which has helped to broaden existing debates. With this in mind, the time is right for a critical re-evaluation of Northern identity and how the borders of region are imagined and defined. This one-day conference invites post-graduate and early-career researchers to discuss the issues and complexities that arise in constructions of ‘the North’ and Northern identity.

The Twitter Hashtag will be #NorthID13

We are delighted to announce that the keynote speakers will be Professor Dave Russell and Dr Melanie Tebbutt. The call for papers for our conference can be found here: http://events.history.ac.uk/event/show/10742 We hope that you submit a paper soon.
